Brands are no longer in competition with each other — they are in competition with the future. Brand loyalty is more fleeting than ever as more nimble, innovative competitors appear around every corner, every day. The most successful companies know how to look around these corners to create the product, the experience, and the communications that propel them far ahead of where they and their customers are today. To establish mass customer intimacy for the long run, they craft digital ecosystems at scale to establish experiences that are familiar to us and, more importantly, that surprise us.

For many years he worked at Ogilvy & Mather, where his team designed the fantasy chocolate store for Disney in Times Square, and the Dove real beauty campaign, among many other big-time corporate projects. He worked for Steve Jobs at Apple. Then he started his own branding and communications firm, Collins, which is a revolutionary agency making ground-breaking work. He’s also an educator. Since 2001 he’s been a professor in the graduate degree program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

On this podcast Debbie talks to Brian Collins about why designers shouldn’t think of themselves as mere problem solvers. “If you’re going to be future facing you can’t wait for a problem, because by the time a problem shows up at your desk it’s too late.” Listen to the full interview here.

Design Matters by Debbie Millman features interviews with designers, artists and cultural leaders, including Lawrence Weiner, Barbara Kruger, Malcolm Gladwell, Eric Kandel, Stefan Sagmeister, John Maeda, Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones, Michael Arad, Milton Glaser, Massimo Vignelli, Paula Scher, Steven Heller, Jonah Lehrer, among others.

Collision Experiences

Brian Collins sees a world where all points collide. Digital into physical. Consumer into producer. Biology into technology. Past into future.

His firm, COLLINS, calls it The Convergence Era. And while this era reaches far beyond brands, it’s forever altered how designers will build them. What was once siloed is now integrated and seamless. Corporate-managed experiences are now controlled by customers, instead.

Today, success no longer hinges on crafting controlled images - but on creating unforgettable experiences that collide, mix, enrich and expand people’s lives.

The Brand Nieuwe Conference is a two-day event organized by UnderConsideration, focusing on the practice of corporate and brand identity — a direct extension of the popular blog, Brand New. The conference consists of eight sessions each day offering a broad range of points of view with speakers from around the world practicing in different environments, from global consultancies, to in-house groups, to small firms. This will be the first time the conference will be held in Europe and it has taken place six times — as the Brand New Conference — in the U.S. in various cities.

The Brand Nieuwe Conference is organized and hosted by UnderConsideration co-founders Bryony Gomez-Palacio and Armin Vit.

Making Trouble

Collins, the New York-based brand and design consultancy that helps companies transform customer experiences, is bringing its multi-disciplined vision of design to San Francisco. Over the past two decades, West Coast entrepreneurs and long-standing companies have experienced wild growth, entered new markets, and diversified the way they connect with consumers. Increasingly, these companies seek to design better brand experiences to keep pace with this rapid change.

Brand and design firm @collins_nyc opens office in San Francisco. Wants to create meaningful customer experiences that can’t be replicated. Tweet this Collins is ideally positioned to answer this challenge. Founders Brian Collins and Leland Maschmeyer point out that design used to fight for a seat at the executive table, but now, in many instances, it’s driving the business.

“Great design used to be ‘a competitive advantage,’” said Brian Collins. “Now it’s table stakes. As more companies realize exceptional customer experiences drive exceptional businesses, the need is stronger than ever to create meaningful ones your competition cannot replicate.”

Collins, who worked in San Francisco during the 1990s, added, “We’re honored to become a part of this remarkable creative community.”

Collins had already begun developing projects with West Coast clients including Facebook, Airbnb, and Shyp the mobile app that makes shipping easier. Current projects include product development, identity design, brand transformation and advertising. It was deeply involved in the development of Facebook’s M.

“Partnering with Collins San Francisco on the identity for M, a digital assistant in Messenger, was awesome,” said Luke Woods, Head of Product Design at Facebook. “The team knows how to move fast and make things. They navigated a tricky set of constraints, collaborated with a broad range of stakeholders and delivered work that speaks for itself. We’re thrilled with the result.”
